Admitted as a Barrister in NSW in 2025

James maintains a practice in family law, care and protection, administrative law, criminal law, and inquests; with particular focus upon matters regarding vulnerable persons.

James appears across various jurisdictions on behalf of vulnerable adults and young persons, as well as accepting briefs to appear as prosecutor in criminal matters, counsel-assisting the coroner in inquest matters, or contradictor in administration and probate matters.

Prior to being called to the Bar, James was the Principal Legal Officer of an Aboriginal family legal service, NAAFLS.

James has appeared in various complex matters including:

  •  Inquiries such as the Inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children (2024)
  •  Inquests such as the Inquests into the deaths of Miss Yunupiŋu, Ngeygo Ragurrk, Kumarn Rubuntja and Kumanjayi Haywood [2024] NTLC 14
  •  Appeals, such as DN v Burns & Anor [2020] 351 FLR 24
  •  Questions reserved for the Full Court, such as The Queen v JHW [2021] NTSCFC 1

James is an AMDRAS accredited mediator, with experience mediating various civilian and defence disputes.

James is a commissioned Reserve Legal Officer in the Royal Australian Navy; with experience appearing in Defence Force Magistrate proceedings, providing advice on administrative and disciplinary matters, and mediating disputes as a Defence DRP.
